WATCH: Islamic Violence On Har Habayis On Tisha B’Av

It was a day of violence on Har Habayis as Muslims did their utmost to compel police to close Har Habayis to Jews on Tisha B’Av. Over 300 Jews were permitted to visit under close police monitoring. Police report at least nine Jews were arrested for violating regulations on the holy site including the recitation of ‘Shema Yisrael’ and ‘Hashem Hu Elokim’.
Muslims were busy trying to confront Jewish visitors and police alike. Police distanced the Muslims from the visitors.
Gedolei Yisrael over the generations and the Chief Rabbinate of Israel prohibit visiting Har Habayis.

A TINY TORAH

The journey of a tiny Torah scroll from a concentration camp to outer space

A secret bar mitzvah at Bergen-Belsen. Israel’s first astronaut, Ilon Ramon. The fate of the Columbia Space Shuttle.

“I thought I was making a documentary about the Holocaust,” director Dan Cohen tells the camera in a meta-movie about his movie, “An Article of Hope.”

But the story he had planned took a remarkable turn when he made a startling discovery about a miniature Torah scroll, no larger than the palm of your hand.

First smuggled into the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1944 by the chief rabbi of Holland, Simon Dasberg, the tiny scroll was used in a clandestine Bar Mitzvah ceremony for the young Joachim Joseph, who promised his rabbi he’d safeguard it. The rabbi perished in the camp, but Joseph survived; and with the scrap of the scroll that enjoined him as an adult to his people, he emigrated to Israel and became a successful scientist. Many decades later, when Israel’s first astronaut Ilan Ramon was conscripted to travel on the Space Shuttle Columbia, Ramon asked Joseph if he could bring the scroll with him into space “as a symbol”.

“He thought he would show it to the world how a person can go from the depths of hell to the heights of space,” Joseph recalls in the documentary.

And indeed, Ramon did just that. Before the mission’s fateful end on February 1, 2003, images from the spacecraft show him holding up the delicate scroll, like a kitten in his hand, for the world to see. The little scroll had survived the Holocaust, but it would not survive the Columbia’s re-entry into the earth’s atmosphere, when the spaceship and all seven passengers disintegrated into thin air over Texas.

It is, after all, a quite literal tale of the magnificent scope of history, from the grounds of a death camp to the known heights of the universe.

Since before he can remember, Camp Simcha Special camper Aaron has always dreamed of being a paleontologist. This evening at Camp Simcha Special, Aaron’s dream came true.

While preparing the ground for the future home of a new bunk house, Camp Simcha Special’s assistant head counselor, Tzvi Haber, stumbled upon what he thought could possibly be authentic dinosaur bones. Little Aaron was secretly called to the scene, accompanied by his camp counselor Mordy Dachs and assigned rotator Chatz Katz, to investigate the reported finding. Aaron was given a professional brush to dust away at the bones, and discovered what he believes are the remains of an ancient battle between a Tyrannosaurus Rex and a Stegosaurus.

Eida Cracking Down On Institutions Accepting State Funds

As the new school year approaches, the Eida Chareidis is cracking down to determine which institutions are secretly accepting state funds in violation of their ‘Taharas HaKodesh’ hashkafa. This is the response to the recent revelation that the Chachmas Lev School for girls was accepting funds from Satmar’s Keren Hatzalah while secretly taking funds from Israel’s Ministry of Education too.
Satmar officials are not taking this lightly and they are compiling a list of the names of all students in the Taharas HaKodesh schools and they are going to check with the ministry to make certain none of the names appear on the state’s list for funding too. Satmar is cutting off funds for any student’s whose name appears in the Ministry of Education database too and actions will be taken against the school.

Eida Beis Din To Determine If Yeshivas Chachmas Lev Took Money From The Zionists

A number of rabbonim, askanim and philanthropists from the Satmar community arrived in Israel on Tuesday 6 Tammuz to address the allegation that Yeshivas Chachmas Lev has accepted state funding for years.

After the news surfaced that the yeshiva has received funds from the ‘treif Zionist state’ for years, the school principal was summoned to meet with Gavaad Eida Chareidis HaGaon HaRav Yitzchok Tuvia Weiss Shlita as well as will Rav Zelig Reuven Katzenelbogen of Torah V’Yirah.
A probe into the matter has revealed that an outside person was responsible for distributing salaries. This person and not the principal is the one who took state funding, which he did without the principal’s knowledge.

The Eida Beis Din was set to convene on Wednesday 7 Tammuz to discuss the matter, aware the principal insists he had no knowledge of state funds being used to pay salaries. Bennett was accompanied by MK Yisrael Eichler, Deputy Mayor of Jerusalem Tzvika Cohen and Head of the Jerusalem Education Administration, Moshe (Kinley) Tor-Paz.

Rabbi Avraham Yehuda Feiner, Director of the Beis Malka school system, spoke about how much the Minister has achieved in the Ministry of Education. He especially praised him  for ending the discrimination against the haredi community with regard to funding for the summer camps.

Bennett replied with a smile that he has a true partnership with MK Eichler. "Even when we do not see eye to eye, I still have to look him in the eye," he quipped.

The markedly warm tone of the visit underscored a budding alliance between Bennett's Jewish Home party and Eichler's United Torah Judaism (UTJ) - with both factions putting a prolonged period of hostility during the previous government behind them.

The Chachmas Lev school for girls was established seventeen years ago after parents pulled their girls out of Bnos Rochel, learning the latter was accepting state funds. There is now a storm in the Eida community after it was learned Chachmas Lev has also accepting state funds all these years from the ‘Treif Zionist government’.
The situation is such the Eida’s Education Committee was scheduled to meet on Sunday afternoon 27 Sivan but the meeting was pushed off a day to money. The rabbonim will discuss the breach in protocol, the acceptance of funding from the ‘Medina’.
According to reports, parents realized something was wrong when they saw Education Ministry officials visiting the school. While the principal is insisting he was unaware of the funding, parents are demanding the Eida Education Committee oust him from his post. The principal’s wife and brother-in-law appear to have made the arrangement with the ministry.

Police in Florida went above and beyond by surprising a boy at his eighth birthday party after no one responded to his invitations. Daniel Nicastro is autistic and that makes it hard for him to make friends — and no one had shown up for his previous two birthdays. His parents didn't want to see him disappointed again, so they sent an invitation to the North Port, Florida Police Department to invite Daniel's favorite heroes. They were hoping a few officers would show up, but instead, an assembly of officers arrived. They bought police-themed gifts and seven of them posed for a picture with Daniel. Police Sgt. Paul Neugebauer says they wanted to attend and let Daniel know that he's appreciated. The photos of the party were passed on, and Daniel has been receiving belated birthday wishes from around the world ever since. Not only that, the experience inspired the North Port police to host a community birthday bash July 3, for every child in the community who "has felt left out." Today, a number of people will be getting haircuts for Shabbos and for Shavuos. If those people read this article beforehand and follow the instructions below – they can fulfill a Torah Mitzvah. If you tell someone who is going to get a haircut about this Mitzvah – then you have been mezakeh that person with a Torah Mitzvah too. Oh, and one last thing. Reading it will help you avoid violating a Torah prohibition too.
TORAH MITZVOS REQUIRE INTENT
The Shulchan Aruch (OC 60:6 and 589:8) rules that when performing a Torah Mitzvah – intent (kavana) is required. The issue is a debate among the Rishonim, but the final halacha is that it does.
THE MITZVAH UNDER DISCUSSION
The verse in Vayikra 19:27 tells us, “Do not round off the corner of your scalp and do not destroy the corner of your beard.”
The halachos are codified in Shulchan Aruch (YD 181).
REASONS FOR THE MITZVAH
The Rambam writes (Laws of Avodah Zarah 12:1) that the prohibition is based upon the fact that idol-worshipping priests would cut their hair in this method. Thus the prohibition is based upon not following in the ways of idol-worshippers. The Sefer HaChinuch (251) and SMaG (Lav 57) present this reason as well.
The Tur (YD 281:1) indicates that it is a Mitzvah of which we are unaware of the underlying rationale, but we follow it because it is the commandment of the King.
INTENT FOR HAIRCUTS
The Kaf HaChaim (YD 232:15) writes that this is true for haircuts as well. If we have in mind that we are fulfilling the Mitzvah of “Lo sakifu p’as roshchem” – we receive credit for the Mitzvah. If we do not have this in mind, then we lose out on it. Bear in mind, that we should also have in mind the Mitzvah of Kavod Shabbos and the Mitzvah of Kavod Yom Tov.
WHERE ARE THE CORNERS?
Every Jewish man has two gun-shaped areas that pointed slightly upward that are located next to his ears. The best way to understand the parameters of where cutting hair on the head is forbidden is to imagine four parts of a gun: The muzzle, the barrel, the hammer and the bottom of the grip or the handle.
• The muzzle is the front – where the bullet comes out (A). It is where the hair starts coming down.
• The barrel is the long tube that leads to the back of the gun (B).
• The hammer is the back of the gun that faces the holder of the gun (C). It is the high point above the ear.
• And the bottom of the grip (D) is the lowest part of the gun. Regarding hair, it is the bottom of the side burn.
If you look at the picture you will see the outline of the gun’s four parts.
It is this gun which forms the pe’ah of the head in which we cannot round off our hair. It is found on both sides of the head.
• The muzzle, once again, is where the hair starts coming down. Every man’s muzzle starts off at a different place.
• Some are of the opinion that the barrel must be rounded and not straight as a precautionary measure.
• There is a debate as to whether the hammer is at the top point of the ear or slightly above it.
• There is also a debate as to where the bottom of the grip should end. Rav Feinhandler in Avneh Yashpeh (Vol. II #68) cites Rav Elyashiv as holding to the view that it should be at the bottom of the earlobe. The Chazon Ish (Orchos Rabbeinu) page 20 held that the bottom of the gun grip is parallel to the lower point of the ear canal.
INTERESTING OTHER ISSUES
Approximately three decades ago, this author had a conversation with Rav Sheinberg zatzal, who indicated his view that the gun extends to even behind the ear toward the back of the head too. His view is that there is one gun following another gun. Most other Poskim do not seem to hold of this view.
There has been a trend, of late, for people to leave the area of the gun more prominent whenever they get a haircut. Thus the area of the gun is much more prominent in that it is cut with a higher trimmer number.
WHAT IS FORBIDDEN?
Cutting hair in the gun-area short with either a razor blade, a shaver, a barber’s trimmer, a scissors, tweezers and depilatory cream is forbidden (this is the Rosh’s view [see Makos 3:2] that the Shulchan Aruch tells us to follow YD 181:3).
This means anywhere in the gun area. Even shaping or edging the gun area with a barber’s trimmer is thus forbidden.
It is forbidden to cut the hair so short that it is no longer bendable. In other words the top of the must be able to touch the root of the hair. In Hebrew this is called, “Lakuf rosho l’ikro.” These parameters can be found in Rambam Hiulchos Tumah (Tzaraas 8:10) and other Poskim cited in Minchas Yitzchok (Vol. IV #113). Rav Elyashiv zt”l’s view (cited in Pe’as Ziknecha page 30) was that to fulfill all opinions it must be left a fifth of an inch long, or 5 millimeters. Generally speaking, a #2 shield leaves the hair bendable. A #1 does not – nor does a 1 and a ½.
COMMONLY VIOLATED
It is a sad reality, but it seems to this author that a majority of other-wise Torah observant people – litvish, chassidesh and sefardic are completely unaware of these three things. They do not know the exact parameters of where the forbidden area actually is (where the gun is), that the area around the gun cannot be trimmed, and they do not know how short the hairs within the gun may be cut. This information should be spread in order to prevent people from in wittingly violating Torah laws.
