Ultra-Orthodox Jewish wedding shut down by Met as it emerges father of the bride worked with the police

The Met were called twice to the wedding in Golders Green after complaints from residents but the event was allowed to go ahead

Police shut down an ultra-Orthodox Jewish wedding after officers were called twice to celebrations flouting the lockdown ban.

Metropolitan Police officers warned the families they were breaking government Covid-19 guidelines after neighbours saw the ceremony being set up in Golders Green, London, at 5.30pm on April 22.

But the wedding went ahead and police were called again at 9pm after a large group were seen gathering outside the property. Officers shut down the event at 11pm and issued one fixed penalty notice, but made no arrests.

Neighbours said the father-of-the-bride worked with the police and the Met confirmed that the chair of the Hackney Independent Advisory Group has stepped down following the incident.

The family are believed to be from an ultra-Orthodox Charedi community in Stamford Hill, but according to local residents had wanted to use the large Golders Green location because it had room for a party of 125 people.

Esther Davis, 42, left the ultra-orthodox community and runs a blog called ‘Diary of an OTD Girl’ - OTD means ‘off the derech’, Jewish slang for ‘lapsed’.

She has shared videos of other breaches of the lockdown rules including a funeral and claims a property business is still operating in Stamford Hill.

“People in the community were leaking videos of the wedding to me. I saw footage of guests arriving, land long, laid-out tables. Someone is overheard saying: ‘I hope they don’t go upstairs’. People were hiding.”

A spokesman for the Office of the Chief Rabbi, Ephraim Mirvis, said: “The overwhelming majority of Jews are meticulously following the rules and are apalled by all instances in which they are flouted.”

A Met Police spokesman said: “Officers attended the address and spoke with the occupants. They were informed that a family occasion was to take place and that a very small number of people would be present.

Appropriate advice regarding government guidelines around Covid-19 was given.

“Police were called again at 21:00hrs following reports of a large group of people gathered at the address.

“Officers attended and engaged, explained the guidance and encouraged compliance. By 23:00hrs the event had closed.

“No arrests were made. One fixed penalty notice was issue
